Harvard Medical School (HMS) was established in 1782, but its first three, black students did not attend until 1850 and were not allowed to complete their first semester. The first black students graduated in 1869. Almost 100 later, HMS enacted an affirmative action admissions policy to actively recruit and retain students of color. FAVOR was responsible for creating the brand platform for ‘Perspective of Change,’ honoring 50 years of civil rights, diversity, inclusion and access to education at HMS and Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). Visit the site for a collection of oral stories shared by alumni, trainees and faculty, along with historical information to provide context to what was happening in Boston and the United States as it relates to the history of medicine at HMS and HSDM.
